PELLA - KATARRAKTES EDESSAS

Taxi transfer to Pella - Edessa Waterfalls

Next to the road Pella - Thessaloniki is the museum and the city of ancient Pella which, as many believe even today, was the capital of the Macedonian Dynasty. Ancient Pella became the capital of the Macedonian state instead of Aigai (Vergina) by the King of Macedonia Archelaus I or Amyntas III who founded it. It flourished during the years of Philip II (father of Alexander the Great) and during the reign of Antigonus Gonatas. The result of the various excavations that began in 1914 was to form an opinion of how the city was organized but also to find various archaeological finds that exist in the archaeological museum of the city. There was a road plan in ancient Pella with rectangular building blocks and main roads leading to the market and the port! Characteristic of the ancient city was the dense water supply and sewerage network, fountains, tanks and baths existed in many parts of it. Also characteristic were the two-storey houses with an inner courtyard and mosaic floors. Mosaic floors are what make Pella stand out with the brightest samples of mosaic floors in the world. The whole city was surrounded by brick walls with a stone base. In the museum of the city are kept innumerable findings of the ancient city that reveal the flourishing of the culture of the Macedonians. Very close to Pella is Edessa and is only 25 km from Aridea. For many archaeologists, Ancient Aigai was located next to the city of Edessa, where its archeological site is today. It was founded by the Macedonian King Heraclides Karanos in 813 BC. and was the first capital of the Macedonian Kingdom. Edessa has a long history since it played an important role through the centuries in the ancient, Byzantine, years of Ottoman rule but also in modern Greek history. In the center of this historic city there is the Park of the Waterfalls that offers the visitor relaxation, coolness but at the same time information about its historicity. In the Waterfall Park, apart from the big waterfall, the visitor will find the Industrial Museum of Kannabourgeio, the Open Air Museum, the taste & water mills, the Aquarium-Reptile that is worth visiting. There are also traditional restaurants & taverns where the visitor can enjoy traditional delicacies under the coolness of the plane trees next to the small artificial streams of water.
